I'm not sure about the 9 family thing.
But one thing for sure: when one has attained LIBERATION, or become arhant, then dedication of merits to his parents even up to 7 lifetimes is a simple matter.
Because the merits of a liberated person is incomparable to ordinary people like us.
Thats why in Ullabanadharma period, 7th month, many monks who return from retreats attained Arhantship. People thus give offerings to these Arhants and dedicate the merits to the deceased. -

The Vinaya rules stated that a male can ordain and return to lay life and then reordain for up to 7 times.
There are some lay followers who are married with children, but would like to experience monastic life abeit short term. I dun see anything wrong with it as it can help the lay follower understand and appreciate the life of a monk, rather than a person who enter monkhood for a very long time, but is avaricious and is not really interested in the Dhamma, like some bogus monks collecting and building up money for himself from devotees. -
there r alot of reasons why pple wan to become monk...some wanna become monk for the sake of becoming monk nt sincerely which is wasting time...like i heard a long phor scolding somebody...why u wan to become monk, and he cant ans the quest, the long phor said did u learnt anything? tt person went uhhhhhhh, the long phor scolded him for wasting time...tt person actually was a monk before n wanted to be one again...
For me why i become monk...I was nt a buddhist...I was mischivious get into alot of troubles wif the law..Until i met my master, he seem to tell me many things which i got shock...ask me wan to become monk to give blessings to my parents anot, transfer merits...tts the only thing i can give to my parents..monetary wise wun be able to repay finish 1...when i heard of tt i straightaway agreed...First time become monk becos of tt...wad was unexpected the monks there kinda like me, taught me alot of things like meditation, and prayers...I prayed for forgiveness for the life i taken away...i cried....
Second time was my mom was going to serve the another batch and have a break in thailand so i thought since my mom is going, why nt i be monk to give her blessing directly instead...so i went again n become monk... the chief monk pull me around the temple introducing me to the other senior monks.
One day one of the senior monk ask me to sit in the front row during evening prayer and without warning he pushed the mic infront of me to let me chant the evening prayers, i reject the offer but he insisted...wah lau the whole temple can hear my voice but after a while i dunno how to read i pass back, so embarrassing...But i felt good cos i juz become a monk n not many pple got the chance to lead the prayer -
Becoming a monk is to walk the path of the deathlessness. Besides accruing a great deal of merit, that is not the point. The point is to obtain liberation from the samsara, either as arahant or bodhisattva. Even if this life you do not attain arahanthood, you will one day attain arahanthood in the future. -
i was told we will reborn until we gain enlightenment...

The Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path are the best truths & pathway ever revealed to us.
There will be people who understand straightaway and renounce. -
If one wants to renounce and found a master who is willing to accept, what abt his cpf savings and his properties and money?
How does one deal with one's CPF savings with CPF?
What abt his reservist? when he renounces, MINDEF discharge him permanently of having to serve reservist? -
Common sense tells you that MINDEF will discharge you from reservist if you become a monk
but as to PERMANENTLY, i think, if you return to lay life, you will still need to take part in NS. otherwise you think go Thailand chu-jia for 1 week then can skip NS for life..?
